Therapeutic Approaches

My work is primarily informed by psychodynamic and humanistic psychotherapy.

These approaches guide how I listen, how I think about difficulties, and how I support change.

Psychodynamic Therapy

Psychodynamic therapy recognises that much of what shapes our thoughts, emotions, and behaviour operates outside of conscious awareness.

Patterns of relating, emotional reactions, and internal conflicts are often rooted in earlier experiences and relational histories. Without realising it, we can repeat these patterns in ways that limit growth or create distress.

In therapy, I engage with these unconscious processes to help expand awareness.

By bringing implicit patterns into conscious understanding, you are able to:

  • Recognise repeating relational dynamics

  • Understand emotional triggers

  • Make more deliberate choices

  • Develop greater internal freedom

The aim is not to dwell on the past, but to understand how it continues to influence the present.

Humanistic Therapy

Wayne Frecklington Psychotherapist Nelson Tasman

Humanistic therapy is grounded in a fundamental belief in the potential of all people to grow.

I approach my work with the view that individuals are capable of goodness, meaning, and development when provided with the right conditions. My therapeutic stance is based on care, respect, authenticity, and curiosity.

This approach supports:

  • Greater self-acceptance

  • Clarification of personal values

  • Development of purpose and meaning

  • Strengthening authenticity in relationships

  • Moving beyond mere survival toward a fuller experience of life

Humanistic therapy does not position people as broken. Instead, it recognises that obstacles can obscure inherent strengths and capacities.

Integrating Depth and Growth

By combining psychodynamic depth with humanistic principles, therapy can address both underlying patterns and future potential.

This integration allows for:

  • Insight into unconscious influences

  • Emotional processing

  • Increased flexibility in personality

  • A stronger alignment with personal values

  • The possibility of experiencing greater clarity and joy

Therapy is a collaborative process. It unfolds at a pace that feels manageable, with space for reflection, honesty, and thoughtful challenge.
